How the self-employed carpenter from Essex and father of one took the rest of the day off work after revealing £100K on a scratchcard from The National Lottery.

James Elsey, 33, his wife Mel, and their two-year-old have been celebrating their dream-come-true start to the new year thanks to The National Lottery.

James bought his ticket while on his way to work in central London. While picking up his workmate, James decided to pop into a local convenience store to buy the scratchcard which he played at work.

Before starting work, James decided to play his scratchcard and to his surprise, he matched two diamonds and saw that the prize was £100K, and when he asked a colleague to check the ticket, the moment he heard ‘I think you’ve won £100,000’ he happily agreed.

Why not take the day off?

Because James did not want to let down his employer, he decided to put the ticket into his pocket safely. He then decided to complete all the urgent jobs before calling his boss to advise him of the good news and then asking for the rest of the day off.

He stated that ‘It’s not every day you win £100,000’ and also that his mind wasn’t on the job and more on his win, he thought it would be much safer to call it a day, given his profession. On his way home, he called his partner, Mel, about the good news, but she didn’t believe him. It was up until he sent her a picture of the winning card that she only believed him. Luckily Camelot was much more believing when he called.

What does this win mean for James?

Being self-employed does not always guarantee financial security, especially in James’ instance. But this win means that James and his young family will have that peace of mind. Most people, who buy a new home, could expect to easily pay off the mortgage for the next 25 years. But thanks to the win, James will be able to cover some moving costs as well as a huge chunk of the mortgage. This will definitely take financial pressure off both him and his partner.

What else does James plan to do with his win?

Like many winners, James plans on treating himself. He stated: ”I’m not sure if you’d call this a treat, but I’ve been

wanting to lease a new work truck for ages.”

Always fearing that he may not be able to keep up with the payments for a new work truck, James is finally ready to ‘treat’ himself with a new truck and said that he can now head into the Ford garage and say ”that truck is mine!”
